We are proud to accept the Annual Joliet Historical Preservation Award for the sensitive interior and exterior preservation work performed during our Project Burnham renovation of the Ottawa Street Branch.
The Joliet City Council and Mayor Terry D’Arcy presented Executive Director Megan Millen with the award at the May 16 City Council Meeting.
Throughout the planning of the renovation, Executive Director Millen, the leadership team and architects worked together to create a building that was not only modernized, but gave a full nod to the buildings history. It was important to patrons and staff alike that the historic feel of the building was not forgotten.
The Ottawa Street Branch was designed by Daniel H. Burnham & Company, and one of the few libraries designed by the firm. The building was constructed between 1902 and 1903 and is the only surviving Joliet limestone building in the downtown area built after 1900.
We are thankful for this award and are happy to showcase our historic library for many more years to come.
